Malama
Logo Design
Malama = "to take care of"
This design project is logo design for a mock ukulele business named "Malama Ukuleles." Unlike other ukulele businesses, this business would aim to help the native Hawaiians with their housing and finances through each purchase of a ukulele.
Today, many Hawaiians struggle to find the means to pay for their housing, leaving many homeless due to the rising cost of housing. Likewise, the ukulele has been adopted into the Hawaiian culture for many years and has been a symbol of peace. The name “Malama” was chosen as it means “to take care of," which is the whole goal of this business as it is trying to give back to the Hawaiian community.

For the logo, I wanted to bring the element of the ukulele and the visual for “Malama” through hands. Finding inspiration from Polynesian patterns, I came up with the graphic that expresses the ukulele with the figure on the left in connection to the figure on the right that is supposed to represent a hand. The way in which they connect also expresses a wave, which connects to the water element of the Hawaiian Islands. For the typeface, I used All Round Gothic since its rounded nature would connect well with the main graphic.
